Activities for adults, children and couples

Thessaloniki is one of those cities that doesn’t really need a strict itinerary. You might head out for a coffee and, a few hours later, find yourself in Ano Poli, at an exhibition or sitting at a table that somehow turned into a much longer lunch than you’d planned.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth having a few good ideas in mind before you arrive. Especially if you’re only in the city for a weekend or a few days.
From walks and food to family activities, things to do as a couple and options for anyone who likes to keep moving, Thessaloniki gives you plenty of ways to fill your day. The key is choosing the ones that actually suit you.

Activities for adults beyond the classic sights

Once you’ve taken your first walk past the White Tower and along the waterfront, it’s worth making room for activities that can completely change the pace of the day.

If you’re after something a little more active, try indoor climbing or bouldering. There are climbing centers even in central Thessaloniki, with routes suitable for people trying it for the first time. It’s probably not the first thing you’d associate with a city break — and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

Travelling with friends? An escape room is another easy option, especially if you’d rather do something together than spend another afternoon moving between cafés and bars. If there’s a bit of friendly competition in the group, you could also try go-karting or explore the city on an organized bike or e-bike tour.

Of course, there’s still room for slower-paced options. A food tour, an exhibition, a theatre performance or a live show can easily round off the day without becoming the whole plan.

Activities for adults in Thessaloniki are much more varied than they might seem at first. Pick something you wouldn’t normally do, and you’ll see a completely different side of the city.

Activities for couples looking for something different

If you’re travelling as a couple, not every suggestion has to end with a “romantic dinner with a view”. There are plenty of more interesting ways to spend a few hours together.

One of the nicest options, especially when the weather is good, is to see Thessaloniki from the sea. A short boat trip across the Thermaic Gulf gives you a completely different view of the city and is even better towards the end of the day, as the sun starts to set.

For something more relaxed, head up to Ano Poli without trying to follow a perfectly planned route. Its narrow streets, old houses and views from the city walls are more than enough reason to spend an afternoon there. Just wear comfortable shoes — the hills are very real.

Want to do something you’ll remember for a little longer? Check whether there’s a wine tasting, cooking class, or cocktail workshop taking place while you’re in town. Activities for couples in Thessaloniki don’t need to be complicated. They just need to be something you don’t do every week.

And if, in the end, you’d rather keep things simple? Grab something to drink and walk along the New Waterfront just before sunset. Sometimes, that’s more than enough.

What to do in Thessaloniki with children

When you’re travelling with children, one rule usually helps: don’t plan five straight hours of museums and sightseeing. You may be able to handle it. They probably won’t.

NOESIS is one of the first places worth considering. With its Planetarium, technology exhibitions and interactive areas, the visit feels much more engaging for younger visitors, as children don’t have to spend the whole time simply looking at exhibits behind glass.

If they’re interested in sports, the Olympic Museum can also be a good addition to the day. After that, though, leave some room for something much simpler.

The New Waterfront works particularly well for families who want to move around without too much planning. There are wide pedestrian areas, bike lanes, themed gardens and plenty of places where you can stop without constantly checking the time.

Even a ride on the Metro can become part of the experience, especially at stations where archaeological finds have been incorporated into the space. It’s an easy way to add a little history to the day without turning it into another lesson.

So, if you’re wondering what to do in Thessaloniki with children, aim for two or three good stops and leave some breathing room between them. The whole day will usually run much more smoothly.

Outdoor and sports activities

Much of central Thessaloniki is relatively flat, which makes it a good city for cycling and long walks.

For cycling or running, the waterfront is the easiest place to start. You can begin near the port, pass the White Tower and continue along the New Waterfront towards the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. You don’t even need to decide in advance how far you want to go.

If you’re looking for more greenery, change the scenery and head towards Seich Sou. There are routes for walking and cycling, close enough to the city that you don’t need to dedicate a whole day to the trip.

With a little more time, you can also look towards Chortiatis. It’s a good option if you want to leave traffic, shops and apartment blocks behind for a while.

In summer, even more possibilities open up. Sailing, SUP and other water-based activities can be combined with a short trip away from the city center. When planning sports activities in and around Thessaloniki, the main things to consider are simply the weather and how much time you have available.

How to organize your activities in Thessaloniki

Don’t try to fit the city center, Ano Poli, a museum, an activity and a trip outside the city into the same day. In theory, you can. In practice, you’ll probably spend more time checking the clock than enjoying Thessaloniki.

It’s much easier to organize your days by area.

The historic center, the markets, Ladadika and the waterfront work well together. Ano Poli deserves a little more time of its own, while for NOESIS, Chortiatis, or other places outside the center, it’s better to keep half a day relatively free.

Getting around the city is fairly straightforward, especially if you’re staying centrally. Many routes can easily be covered on foot, while for longer distances you can use the Metro, city buses or a taxi, depending on where you want to go.

For museums, workshops, performances or organized activities, it’s worth checking opening times and booking requirements in advance. Everything else can stay a little more flexible.

If it’s your first time in the city, you can naturally combine these ideas with Thessaloniki’s main sights and attractions. Just don’t feel that you have to see everything. The city is more enjoyable when you leave room for the stops you hadn’t planned.

Make Thessaloniki city center your starting point

If there’s one thing that makes a noticeable difference during a city break in Thessaloniki, it’s being able to step outside your hotel and already be close to where much of the city life happens.

S Hotel Boutique is located near Eleftherias Square, within easy reach of Ladadika, the waterfront, the markets and much of the historic center. That means many of your days can begin without a car, without too much planning and, most importantly, without wasting time getting from one place to another.

It’s also useful to be able to return to your hotel during the day, take a break and head out again later. This is especially convenient when you’re travelling with children or when an evening out is part of your plans — a small detail that often makes more difference than you might expect.

From there, all that’s left is to choose what best suits your mood and the time you have available. Make room for the things you’ve planned, but leave a little space for whatever comes up along the way. After all, some of the best moments in Thessaloniki are often the ones that were never on the itinerary in the first place.
